Virtual Playing Orchestra is a free orchestral sample library (sometimes incorrectly called a Soundfont, VST or VSTi) that provides the sounds of all the instruments of an orchestra designed to be played back via a MIDI interface and a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). Download for Windows (32 bit) - 43Mb Download for Windows (64 bit) - 43Mb. The instrument is provided as-is, with no warranties. It should work fine on most DAWs. It has been developed and tested on a Windows 10 PC and it worked fine with Reaper, Tracktion, Studio One, Podium, MuLab and SAVIHost.

This one was the very first orchestral instrument plugin I ever figured out how to use as a music student. It is an old orchestral synthesizer with surprisingly usable sounds. It used to cost money but was later made completely free to use. It’s been discontinued for years now, and the only way to get your hands on it these days is from third parties. So here it is as a free download! This one is a must for any beginner orchestrator or composer. It served me well for many years *sheds a single manly tear*

Reaper

Free Vsts For Reaper

  • Premium acoustic sounds, focusing on Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion and Keyboards.
  • Realistic articulations such as vibrato, tremolo, pizzicato, and spiccato.
  • Up to 16-part and 128-voice polyphony.
  • Up to 24-bit/96kHz sampling resolution.
  • Multiple output (compatible with DXi 2.0 and VST 2.0).
  • Fully assignable MIDI control.

Unfortunately it’s only available as a 32-bit plugin. You will need to bridge it using Jbridger if you’re on a 64-bit machine (and you should be, let’s be honest). You can learn more about that from the dev at https://jstuff.wordpress.com/jbridge/

This is a simple and FREE VSTi plugin created to help you sketch/prototype your orchestral arrangements and productions in an easy and fast way.

This instrument puts a complete orchestra on a single track of your DAW. You can add strings, brass, woodwinds and even percussion at the same time, using only one MIDI channel. You can listen to an example below :

The sounds of the different instruments are mapped on different sections of the keyboard, and they are velocity dependent. The only controls on the GUI are the reverb and volume faders.

This is a free sketching tool, created for songwriting/demo recording, so it does not include multiple articulations or round robin samples. It is not supposed to be an alternative to big, professional sampled instruments and libraries.
