Virtual Playing Orchestra is a free orchestral sample library (sometimes incorrectly called a Soundfont, VST or VSTi) that provides the sounds of all the instruments of an orchestra designed to be played back via a MIDI interface and a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). This one was the very first orchestral instrument plugin I ever figured out how to use as a music student. It is an old orchestral synthesizer with surprisingly usable sounds. It used to cost money but was later made completely free to use. It’s been discontinued for years now, and the only way to get your hands on it these days is from third parties. The sounds of the different instruments are mapped on different sections of the keyboard, and they are velocity dependent. The only controls on the GUI are the reverb and volume faders.
This is a free sketching tool, created for songwriting/demo recording, so it does not include multiple articulations or round robin samples. It is not supposed to be an alternative to big, professional sampled instruments and libraries.
